SPANDREL

The good thing almost never arrives where you aimed. It turns up beside it.

The name
SPANDREL arch
The gold is the spandrel — the part nobody designed.

Definition

spandrel

/ˈspandrəl/ · noun

Architecture

The leftover triangular space between an arch and the frame around it. It is not designed. It is what the arch happens to leave behind. Michelangelo filled the ones in the Sistine Chapel with prophets, and they are some of the best painting in the building.

Evolutionary biology

Gould and Lewontin's word, 1979: a trait that was never selected for. It came along as a side effect of something else — and then turned out to carry everything.

We took the name because it is already our method. We aim at one thing. The good thing shows up in the space next to it, and that is the one we keep.

The work

Mathematical objects you can hold.

Knots, minimal surfaces, hyperbolic solids, mechanisms that print in one piece. We model them, print them, break them, print them again — and then give the files away.

Septafoil Marble Track

Seven balls, one endless loop. It is a (2,7) torus knot — a single tube that crosses over itself seven times and closes with no start and no finish, so the 564 mm of track inside just carries the bearings around again.

It prints in one piece, in place, with no supports at all. Pause it partway up, drop the bearings into the seven dips, and let the print close over them.

$15 Septafoil marble track — a gold seven-lobed knot with steel balls inside

Septafoil

Seven steel balls sealed inside a seven-lobed knot. Tilt it and they chase each other round a track that has no beginning. The balls go in mid‑print, so they can never come out.

$10 Snapback — a white printed push-button fidget with a visible coil spring

Snapback

Push the button down over eight teeth. Let go, and a printed spring shoves it back up, clicking the whole way. One piece, no assembly, nothing to lose.

$10 Liftoff — a white printed rocket sitting on a coil spring inside its launcher

Liftoff

A rocket sitting on a printed coil. Press it down into the launcher, let go, and it pops. Nothing to wind, no battery, nothing that can fall off.

Prints

Grown, not enlarged.

Every one of these was re-generated at full print resolution — the simulation run again at 7200 pixels, the strokes laid down again, the organism grown again. None of them has been through an upscaler. What you would hang is detail that was computed, not detail that was invented.

The files stay free, the same as everything else here. What costs money is the object — paper, ink, and a machine that got it right.

Agate Iris — gold and blue mineral banding around a dark eye Agate Iris · 2026

Agate Iris

Two vortices, one warm and one cool, turning against each other while 172,000 particles trace the flow between them. Where the streamlines crowd, the deposit bands like mineral strata. Nobody drew the rings.

It survived a seventeen-round tournament in which a panel voted every round and Ivy overrode the panel twice. The overrides were right both times.

House rules

Three things we hold to.

I

Keep the accident

A shell that failed became a narwhal horn. A texture that came out wrong became armadillo hide. The mistake usually knows something we didn't.

II

Make the version reality can't

An impossible soft-serve swirl beats a faithful copy of a real one. If the machine can make a thing the world refuses to, make that.

III

Give it away

Everything we publish is CC0. Download it, remix it, sell it, don't credit us. The point is that it exists in other people's hands.
